10 Steps to Take After a Car Accident

By Pierce Blitch

A car crash can be one of the most traumatic events you might experience. It’s an unexpected incident that can change your life and your family’s in an instant. To protect yourself, your family, and the compensation you deserve, follow these 10 crucial steps after a car accident.

1) Stay at the Scen

The shock of a car crash can cloud your judgment. However, it is essential to stay at the scene. Leaving the scene could imply liability or guilt and might result in criminal charges. Stay and wait for the police to arrive.

2) Call 911 and Report the Crash

Immediately call 911 and report the accident, especially if anyone is injured. Reporting the crash first allows you to provide a clear account of the incident. Call 911 as soon as you can.

3) Do Not Admit Fault or Apologize

Avoid saying “I’m sorry” or apologizing at the scene. Emotions can skew your judgment, and an apology might be seen as an admission of liability or guilt. Ensure the police do not include your apology in their report. Do not apologize.

4) Limit Conversation with the Other Party

Exchange insurance information with the other party but avoid discussing the accident details. Politely decline to discuss what happened until the police arrive.

5) Take Photos and Videos of the Scene

Use your smartphone to take photos and videos of the vehicles, damage, street intersections, and weather conditions. If the other driver is in a business vehicle, capture all writing and other information on it. Photos and videos are valuable for your case.

6) If Injured, Don’t Move Around

After the crash, neck or back injuries are common. Moving around can worsen these injuries or cause permanent damage. If you suspect serious injury, stay still and wait for first responders.

7) Go to the Hospital if Injured

After assessing your physical state, if you have any injuries, go to the hospital. Adrenaline can mask pain, so it’s essential to get checked out as soon as possible.

8) Do Not Speak to the Other Party’s Insurance Company

Avoid talking to the other party’s insurance company. They might try to get you to admit fault. Other than providing the name of your attorney, do not give any statements.
