Every day, Georgia drivers face numerous distractions on the road, from adjusting the radio to scrolling through a smartphone. Despite laws designed to curb these behaviors, distractions remain a significant factor in car accidents, threatening lives and livelihoods. Let’s break down Georgia’s texting laws and what they mean for you.
Georgia’s Texting and Cell Phone Laws
· Texting Law: Georgia banned all texting while driving in 2010 with O.C.G.A. § 40-6-241.
· Teen Driver Cell Phone Ban: Georgia also prohibits all cell phone use for teen drivers. O.C.G.A. § 40-6-241.1.
These laws reflect the dangers of distracted driving and aim to keep drivers safer.
Real-World Risks of Distracted Driving A 2006 study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) paints a grim picture of the consequences:
· 80% of crashes involve some form of distraction within three seconds before the incident.
· Over a year, 100 vehicles and 241 drivers were monitored, covering two million miles and 42,000+ hours of driving.
· The result: 82 collisions, 761 near-collisions, and 8,296 critical incidents.
Frequent distractions like texting or drowsiness drastically increase the risk of crashes. Even talking on the phone can impair your focus.
Understanding Distractions Beyond Cell Phones The NSC found that at any given moment, about 7% of drivers are on their phones. Hands-free devices don’t reduce distractions, as conversations themselves create a significant risk. Other activities also increase crash risks:
· Reaching for a Moving Object: Increases crash risk by 9 times.
· Drowsiness: Increases risk 4 times.
· Looking Outside the Vehicle: Increases crash risk by 3.7 times.
· Reading: Increases crash risk 3 times.
· Grooming: Increases crash risk 3 times.
· Using GPS: Increases crash risk 3 times.
· Talking/Listening to Handheld Phones: Increases crash risk 1.3 times.
Your main priority while driving is to keep your focus on the road. Parents, especially, should encourage their teen drivers to avoid using their cell phones while driving. If you’ve been involved inan accident involving a distracted driver or a driver on their cell phone, I can help you seek fair compensation for your injuries and damages.
